Gender Identity Disorder Books

reviewed by Carol

Cross Dressing, Sex, And Gender Bullough, Vern L., Bullough, Bonnie. University of Pennsylvania Press 1993.

This thoroughly researched and well-organized book gets into the cultural and historical background of cross-sex behavior. It's useful to understand there was a time before surgical reassignment when all cross-gender expression was considered to be cross-dressing. It's only when we get to the modern perspective that transsexuality comes into play.

Gender Outlaw: On Men, Women, And The Rest Of Us Bornstein Kate. Vintage 1994.

Kate is a post operative transsexual and a gender activist who argues for a third gender for the trans-people, and an elimination of the whole two gender system. At times she argues eloquently that there should be a separate gender for each person, then argues there shouldn't be any concept of gender at all. So, why did she have genital surgery?
